Becca's cosy shared bedroom for her youngest boys
It's no secret that kids can outgrow their favourite colours, toys and obsessions just as quickly as their clothes. So when it comes to creating a bedroom space that they'll love for years to come, it's a tall order! Luckily, Mustard co-founder Becca has cracked the code.
Becca's two youngest sons Ellis, 6, and Otis, 3, share a room that was once Becca and Jono's bedroom. "The room was a soft grey before," Becca says, and "it didn't give off kids' room vibes so one goal was to add more colour and playfulness in a timeless kind of way." To create the look, Becca leaned into a palette inspired by nature, with earthy rust shades paired with Mustard's popular greens, Sage and Olive.
The result is a calming, comforting space that feels cosy and fun. Perfect for a room that invites play, stories, and most importantly, sleep!
bedtime stories
Speaking of sleep, one of the first priorities was a bed. "As Otis had outgrown his cot," Becca says, "we needed to change up the layout so he could have a big boy bed. We chose the gorgeous but beautifully simple Plyroom Bunk bed." Ellis is thrilled about his upgrade to the top bunk, too!
As any parent knows, a big part of the night-time routine is reading. Becca uses a Midi in Sage to store the boys' books, arranged in colour order of course. "It's such a delight to open it and see their little rainbow library inside!" At night they can pick their own books from the shelves, it's lovely when they can reach their things and really creates a sense of independence.
green thumb
Green brings the outside in and keeps this small but vibrant room feeling fresh, fun and relaxed. "Olive green has always been the colour I'm drawn to most for my own home," Becca says of her choice. "While I love colourful spaces, I crave a sense of calm and love to be in green spaces outdoors, so the deep green is my personal go-to. Sage was a newer addition to our rainbow, and it's become our best-selling colour. You can't go wrong with Sage. It's pretty and extremely versatile!"
With green as the feature colour for the space, Becca used a classic Mustard trick and had the wall paint matched to a Sage locker. "We actually get asked quite often about which wall colours match our lockers. The trick is to take a colour swatch or the locker keyring to the paint shop. They can mix up a custom shade to match the colour perfectly, and it always works a treat!"
organisation, unlocked
"Our boys have a Twinny in Olive each as their wardrobe," Becca explains. "I love that they can be configured to suit how you want to use them. Ellis is big enough to pick his own clothes, so he has all his tops on the lower rail with Ocean hangers and everything else he needs day-to-day within his reach. The top part has space for extra toys and winter jackets."
The great thing about lockers is that you can customise them to suit your needs. Otis has lots of little clothes folded in baskets for easy access and uses the hanging rail with Sage hangers at the top for his grown-ups to reach. At the bottom, there's space for toys and clothes he hasn't grown into yet. "Perks of being brother number three!"
The key to keeping everything tidy? "I love using The Baskets to segment things," Becca says, "so that everything has a place where it belongs. Whether it's toys, socks or shoes, everything is better and easier to find in a basket!"
Becca calls The Twinny the "ultimate" locker style. "It's deceptively roomy inside and being able to place the shelves where you want them (or add more!) and add or remove the rails gives them so many ways to be useful. It really is a locker for life."
it's the little things
Finishing touches like soft furnishings and accessories really bring this room to life, adding colour and pattern to create interest. "The rug feels so cosy and is super soft for Otis to practice his pre-bedtime gymnastics on," Becca laughs. "Rachel Castle is always a fave of mine so when they launched this rug, I knew it was a perfect fit. It's fun but still simple and the colours worked a treat."
"I am so glad we purchased the adorable table and stools. It makes me so happy when I see them sitting in their bedroom, playing shops or drawing. It's just a lovely finishing touch to the space. The brand Babai is based in Ukraine and have been through so much, so it's a great business to support."
Becca adds, "I can't not mention the joyful bedlinen and cushions. Making their beds is such a pleasure when it looks this cute! I mixed and matched patterns, textures and colours to make each bunk a little different but still tied together and extremely cute and comfy."
Becca did want to add a disclaimer: "It doesn't always look this tidy!" Two little people in one room means there's always plenty of mess and that's just the way it should be (as long as there's a locker for it to get tidied away into later!)
