Level up your locker: meet our Disco Midi
Taking three painstaking days to create, this Disco locker makeover was a labour of love. But when the Disco calls, you can't ignore it!
Disco balls have been showing up in our world a lot lately. We first noticed them at the shoot for our home tour featuring Turmeric House. Once we'd started spotting them, they seemed to be everywhere — and we decided to take it as a sign! We've dreamed up lockers in almost every colour of the rainbow (yes, even beige!) but this concept unlocked a whole new world of possibility.
Mustard's visual designer Sophie Elinor is no stranger to a more-is-more stroke of creative genius. She's even created rhinestone-bedazzled disco eggs before (see above!), so we knew right away that she was the perfect sparkly expert to tackle this mammoth of a mirrorball task. Pop on your rollerskates and come along for the ride with us!
check your reflection
"I have such a big soft spot for bedazzling and disco-fying," Sophie says. "It adds instant whimsy. I love that it can take the sunlight and scatter it around a space, creating unpredictable little universes of reflections. It feels kinda precious but in a playful, really accessible way."
Playful AND accessible? Two of our favourite locker-related words! While Sophie has worked with teeny tiny disco mirrors before, covering a locker in mirrored squares was a new level of challenge. "There is a lot of surface area on a locker!" she laughs, but seriously, it's not even funny, a locker is big!
Mustard in the mirror
So how did she do it? Sophie started by wrapping the two front panels of a Midi in sheets of adhesive mirror mosaic tiles. "The front panels were definitely the trickiest," she says, thanks to all the little details like the air vents, handles and the iconic Mustard logo. "I had to remove the handles to do a full wrap-around with the sheets." She then used a laser cutter to create the Mustard logo and the matching keyrings out of lightweight acrylic mirror. Pretty spiffy! We've never seen the words 'glow-up' interpreted quite so literally.
roll on, baby!
Once she got the hang of bedazzling the locker, Sophie discovered a handy rolling application technique that allowed her to have a bit more control of the process. She found she could be a little more accurate by 'shimmying' (very appropriate for a Disco locker) the sections of tiles along to place them exactly where she wanted them. This is definitely no beginner project! Luckily, Sophie has plenty of disco rodeos under her belt.
disco fever
When the Disco Midi arrived at Mustard HQ, the excitement was at an all-time high! We all gathered at the front door to watch her make her grand entrance and we love her so much we've even rearranged the office in her honour. The Disco Midi now sits in the perfect sunny corner to catch the rays of sunshine coming through from the back door. The result? A shiny, happy, very selfie-friendly locker that we're all rather obsessed with (just check our camera rolls for the evidence.)
They say glitter is a neutral, and we have to agree!
